Portfolio / Nudes.
Nude photography is a well-known genre, but it can take many forms. The term 'artistic nude', which is often used, seems vague to us, and in any case brings together several photographic sub-genres. We prefer the following, much more precise terms:
- Sculptural nude. The aim here is to capture the aesthetic beauty of the human body. The poses are often very elaborate and ultimately quite unnatural. The lighting is designed to bring out the modelling, often leaving large areas of shadow.
- Sensual nude. The poses are languid and suggest a certain eroticism. The body is not necessarily visible in full: veils may cover part of it. The light is soft.
- Documentary nude. As the name suggests, used for documentary purposes, for example to illustrate an article, usually on biology or medicine.
- Conceptual nude. The image of a naked body, or part of a body, is used to serve a particular idea, concept or message.
- And then, of course, there's the pornographic nude, the definition of which we don't really need to go into here.
